Summer Excavation 2017

Our 2017 excavation will be from 4th to 8th September. In addition we are planning two follow up excavation days on Sunday 24th September and Sunday 22nd October Participants will have the chance to get involved in the following:-

                              Recording and planning archaeological features

                              Section drawing

                              Surveying and levelling

                               Post excavation analysis

The excavation is suitable for those with little or no archaeological experience as well as individuals who have already undertaken some fieldwork.

Camping with limited facilities is available on site. We can also provide a list of local bed and breakfast accommodation.

The site is easily accessible from junction 15 on the M1 motorway. For those coming by train we can usually provide, by prior arrangement, lifts to and from Milton Keynes railway station.

Clothing and equipment

Even  in summer the site can be somewhat exposed to the elements A hat, stout boots and waterproof clothing are all strongly recommended, as is suitable clothing to give protection from the sun as needed. All necessary equipment is provided but most students have their own trowel. We can provide advice on buying a trowel if required.

We hope to complete the excavation and recording of a circular building of clay bonded limestone (shown right), tentatively identified as a dovecote. We also intend, using geophysics and a series of test pits, to define an area, previously identified as being the possible location of further buildings, with a view to opening a new trench.
